Scope and Contents
This series consists of correspondence from merchants and agents in foreign ports, including Bilbao and Cadiz, in Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal, regarding the delivery and sale of the cargo of Thomas & William Davis, and goods the firm was importing back to the United States. Topics include prices current, and the state of the market for various American products like fish and grain in foreign ports, which was frequently impacted by the French Revolutionary Wars. Correspondents mostly include agents who conducted business on behalf of Thomas & William Davis,but also several ship's captains, including Nathaniel Carver, who also offered news regarding the sale of the firm's commodities and the status of voyages carrying Davis cargo.
