Series I. Legal papers and government documents, 1782-1830
Scope and Contents
This series consists of land and property deeds of Joseph Hurd, Sr., contracts, Joseph Hurd Jr.'s passport, and documents permitting William Hurd to conduct business in Italian ports. It also contains correspondence and legal documents related to the capture in 1807 of cargo belonging to Joseph & William Hurd aboard the brigantine Eclipse. Included in the property records is a color-illustrated survey of land near the Genesee River conducted by Seth Pease for the Holland Land Company in 1799. After the Seneca signed the Treaty of Big Tree, the Dutch syndicate gained control of 3.3 million acres in western New York and hired a team of surveyors to map the lands. The survey began on March 1798 and concluded in October 1800.
