Brownlow, William Gannaway to George E. Baker, Jun. 8, 1861 Digital

Scope and Contents

Letter from newspaper publisher Brownlow (1805-1877) enclosed with a receipt for a check Baker sent for printing federal laws in the Knoxville Whig; he notes the letter containing the check had been detained nine days and had been opened, "no doubt at Nashville, where there is a corrupt pack of rascals, seeking to apprehend Union men." Since there was no mention of politics or the Civil War in the communication, it was released and forwarded through the post, Brownlow concludes. "If they open this, they can have my private opinion of them," he adds.
