Scope and Contents

Two letters from the Massachusetts writer Hannah Adams (1755-1831) to her niece Mary, which have been attached. In the first, Adams writes about mutual acquaintances, her travel plans, the health of friends, and Mary beginning a teaching position at an academy in Milton. In the second, she discusses the poor health of Mary's family and their lodging situation.

Biographical / Historical

Hannah Adams was the first American woman to attempt to support herself by her writings. Born in Medfield, Massachusetts, in 1755, she was self-educated and wrote mainly about comparative religion and history. Among her published works were A view of religions (1784), A summary history of New-England (1799) , and History of the Jews (1812). She died in Brookline in 1831.
