Biography

William Gibbons; born October 9, 1794 at Savannah, Ga.; died December 10, 1852 at Savannah; son [not brother] of Thomas Gibbons (1757-1826); inherited his father's slave plantations in Georgia and steamboat operations based in Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth), N.J.; sold his steamboat operations to more aggressive and capable operators, ca. 1829-1830, and retired to the life of a gentleman-planter, farmer and breeder of racehorses; developed a large country estate and farm called "The Forest" at what is now Madison, N.J., which his son William Heyward Gibbons was force to sell and part of which is now the campus of Drew University
