Biography

Francoise Madeleine May was born to Paul May, Belgian Ambassador to the United States and his wife around 1911. She was an active Girl Guide in Belgium and when she followed her father to the United States in 1931, signed up with the Washington, D.C. area Girl Scouts. She became captain (leader) of Troop 53 which was divided into 53 and 53A. She became a popular speaker about the Girl Guides and a staff member for Camp May Flather. She had a coronation and named "Queen Francoise". When her father died in 1934 and she returned to Belgium, Virginia (Ginger) Hammerley succeeded her as troop captain. The scrapbooks of Troop 53's activities and May's involvement and letters are in the archives of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (Washington D.C.).

Scope and Contents: Two handwritten letters from Francoise May, daughter to Paul May, Belgian ambassador to the United States, to Mildred Bliss. The letters request opening the Dumbarton Oaks garden to benefit the Girl Scout Troop 53 and then thanks Bliss for doing so.
