Biography

William Lescaze (1896-1969) was born in Onex, Switzerland. He studied at College Calvin and Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He completed his architectural degree at Ecole polytechnique federale de Zurich. He immigrated to the United States in 1920. In 1929 he formed a architectural partnership with George Howe and formed Howe & Lescaze in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a proponent of modern architecture. He married Mary Hughes in 1933. He died of a hear attack at his home in New York in February 1969.

Scope and Contents: Typescript letter with handwritten signature from architect William Lescaze to Mildred Bliss tells her he enjoyed the conducted tour through Dumbarton Oaks. She has made it an extraordinarily fascinating piece of art, and he is very grateful for the privilege of having had you in person to show it to Mr. Hynds and himself.
