Biography

Demas Barnes (1827-1888) was married to Anna Dorinda Blaksley Barnes. He had two daughters, Cora Barnes and Mildred Barnes Bliss. He was involved in the drug business which included Charles Henry Fletcher's Castoria. He started a wholesale drug business in 1953 in New York and was a successful patent medicine manufacturer. He served as a U.S. House of Representatives for the second district of New York from 1867-1869.

Scope and Contents: Exchange of letters regarding the provenance of the Gainsborough portrait by Mrs. Jordan owned by Robert and Mildred Bliss. The inquiry from Frances S. Fink resulted in a memorandum from John Thacher to Robert and Mildred Bliss. Mildred writes Miss Sally Fairchild, whose mother sold the sketch to Mildred Bliss's father, Demas Barnes if she remembered any provenance information.
