Biography

Alfred Church Lane (January 29, 1863-April 15, 1848) was a prominent American geologist and teacher. He received an A.B. degree from Harvard College in 1883 and then taught mathematics at Harvard from 1883 to 1885. He returned to Harvard to earn his Ph. D in 1888. Lane was the Pearson professor of geology and mineralogy at Tufts College from 1892-1936. He served as consultan of science to the Library of Congress in 1929, and president of the Geological Society of America in 1931. He authored 1,087 works over the course of his career.
