Records of the Choate Club, 1955-1967

Overview: The Choate Club was founded at the Harvard Law School in 1887 as a chapter of the Phi Delta Phi, a law-school fraternity. In its later years, the Club appears to have been a secret society composed of Law School students and professors, with a focus on social and intellectual stimulation outside of study of the law. Clarence Clyde Ferguson photographs

Overview:

The bulk of the photographs date from the period 1969 to 1983, beginning from the time Ferguson was appointed Special Coordinator of Relief to the Civilian Victims of the Nigerian Civil War. There are several miscellaneous items (11-6), including an example of African (Nigerian?) embroidery.

Smith family papers

Contains legal papers of Manasseh Smith, Sr., Joseph Emerson Smith, Samuel Emerson Smith and other members of the Smith family who practiced law in midcoast Maine, Boston and Chicago from the late 18th century to the early late 19th century. Also contains papers relating to the real estate and paper mill business of Dudley W. Moor and Edward W. Heath.

William Hastie photographs

Overview:

The collection consists almost exclusively of black and white photographs. There are also a few letters and notes identifying many of the images in the collection. The photos span the years 1905 to 1994, with the bulk of them dating from the period starting with Hastie's appointment as Civilian Aide to Secretary of War Harold Stimson in 1940, through his tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and ending with his death in 1976.
