 Organization

Biography

Steam locomotive manufacturer based in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1831 Holmes Hinkley and his partner Daniel F. Child founded the Boston Machine Works [not to be confused with the later manufacturer of the same name located in Lynn, Massachusetts that produced shoe machinery]; in 1848 the company reorganized as the Boston Locomotive Works, operating under that name until 1859, when the financial panic drove the company into foreclosure; Hinkley was forced out in the foreclosure, but the company reorganized under Jarvis Williams as Hinkley, Williams and Company; Hinkley returned in another reorganization in 1864 and company became Hinkley and Williams Locomotive Works; in 1872 the company was renamed Hinkley Locomotive Works; bankruptcy in 1880 forced the company to reorganization again as the Hinkley Locomotive Company; the company was permanently closed in 1889
