Biography

Jewett City Cotton Manufacturing Company; founded 1809; Jewett City, Conn.; in 1823 purchased by Samuel and John Slater and reorg. as S. & J. Slater; in 1843 properties inherited by John Slater's sons, John Fox and William and renamed J. & W. Slater; in 1872 partnership dissolved and renamed Slater Company; in 1913 reincorporated as W.A. Slater Corporation; cotton manufacturers; in 1825 Hopeville Mill, Hopeville, Conn., purchased by the Slaters and became part of the family interests

Overview:

Samuel Slater (1768-1835) and his partners established the first cotton mill in the United States in 1791 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Later, Samuel Slater, his brother, and their children established a series of cotton and woolen mills in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The collection includes general accounting records, production records, and letters representing Slater family interests, mainly in textile manufacturing.
