Administrative correspondence of the Gray Herbarium and Harvard University Herbaria

Scope and Contents: The collection consists of Gray Herbarium correspondence from the 1890s to present day but the bulk of the letters are from 1890-1955. Most of the letters are addressed to staff members of the Gray Herbarium and were transferred to the archives from the herbarium office files. Some letters were gifts to the Gray Herbarium that were interfiled into the collection. Admission lists

Overview: This collection contains handwritten lists of Harvard freshmen entering the College in the years 1743-1753, 1758, and 1760-1764 which correspond to the Harvard Classes of 1747-1757, 1762, and 1764-1768. The admission lists provide the first documentary evidence of a student's life at Harvard and were presumably created in the early days of the fall semester.

Overview: From the Latin meaning "be admitted," an admittatur served as a student's certificate of admission to Harvard College beginning in the 1650s. The collection contains admittaturs to Harvard College signed by the President and several Tutors and Fellows. The admittaturs document a component of the College's 17th and 18th century admissions procedures, and the manuscript and printed copies of the College laws complement the Laws and Statutes collection and provide insight into the Harvard...
