Overview: Eileen Jackson Southern (1920-2002) was the first African-American woman to be appointed as a tenured full professor at Harvard University, where she taught from 1975 to 1987. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, and publications that chronicle her time as a Harvard College professor and as Chair of the Afro-American Department, as well as her tenure at the City University of New York, and retirement.
