Elizabeth (Crampton) Booth Shepherd was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1914. When her mother died in 1929 she went to live with aunts in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. She attended local schools and then went on to Radcliffe from where she graduated in 1936 cum laude in Fine Arts. She earned her A.M. in 1938 in Fine Arts from the University of Pittsburgh.

Shepherd was docent at the Carnegie Museum and then taught history of art as an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1941 she married Donald Booth and while bringing up their seven children, was involved in the Parent Teacher's Association, the Women's Club, and the Village Garden Club.

After her husband's death in 1966, Shepherd went back to school and received her M.L.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968. She was a cataloguer at the Frick Fine Arts Library for five years and then became head of the library for five years.

After retirement in 1980 she continued to work in libraries as a volunteer. In 1983 she married Charles S. Shepherd, a retired engineer.
