.83 linear feet ((2 file boxes) plus 2 folio folders)

This collection contains correspondence, financial papers, photographs, miscellaneous notes, and sketches. The bulk of the correspondence dates from the 1920s and 1930s; it is arranged by writer, although most folders also contain some letters to the writer. Fragile letters have been photocopied; the originals are closed to research. Some letters are fragments only. Photographs are for the most part unidentified, and a substantial portion of the notes is nearly indecipherable.

The branch of the Hamiltons represented in this collection is the family of Montgomery Hamilton and Gertrude (Pond) Hamilton and their five children, Edith, Alice, Margaret, Norah, and Arthur. For their relationship to other Hamiltons, see the inventory for the Hamilton family papers, MC 278. For biographical information about Alice and Edith, see Notable American Women, the Modern Period (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1980); see also Alice Hamilton: A Life in Letters, by Barbara Sicherman (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1984).

The preeminent research library on the history of women in the United States, the Schlesinger Library documents women's lives from the past and present for the future. In addition to its traditional strengths in the history of feminisms, women’s health, and women’s activism, the Schlesinger collections document the intersectional workings of race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class in American history.
