Papers of William Lyman Phillips

Content Description

A substantial collection of materials related to the personal life and professional practice of landscape architect William L. Phillips. Included are project files, photographs, clippings and ephemera, as well as research files assembled by Phillip's biographer Faith R. Jackson. [See Box 4, Series III.]

Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of both personal and site records. Correspondence, plans, photographs, slides, drawings and pamphlets are included in the collection. Correspondence, Series I., between Prentiss French and WLP provide a glimpse at the landscape architecture field of the early half of the cnetury and supplements an already existing correspondence collection in Special Collection between the two. Series II., The project materials, Series III., provide correspondence, photographs, reports and some plans to parks, gardens, and public works projects in Florida, some still in existence. Several projects sponsored by the Civilian Conservation Corps are also present in the collection. The strength of the collection are those materials that document parks no longer in existence, such as Royal Palm State Park (originally an entrance to Everglades National Park) and those that document already existing parks in their earliest incarnations. Photographs, Series IV., comprise a large portion of the collection and provide insight into WLP's view of architecture and landscapes as a young landscape architect. Plans, Series VI., although not complete for each project, complement project materials. The collection's materials date from 1888 - 1997, with bulk of the materials from c. 1900 - 1960. Also included in the collection are research material generated by Faith Reyher Jackson, author of Pioneer of Tropical Landscape Architecture: William Lyman Phillips in Florida (The Univerisity Press of Florida, 1997). The Papers of William Lyman Phillips were a gift made to the Special Collections by Faith Jackson and Julia Phillips Coyle.
