Scope and Contents
The letters in this collection are primarily from Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis to his daughter, Susan. Also included in the collection are additional Brandeis family letters, as well as letters to Justice Brandeis from contemporaries, including Supreme Court Justices and United States Presidents. The collection also includes two letters from Albert Einstein to Susan. All letters are handwritten unless otherwise noted. The donation also included a 1919 copy of the book, “Palestine of the Jews” by Norman Bentwich. The book has not been digitized.

Frank Brandeis Gilbert is the grandson of Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis. He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1952 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1955. In 1965, Gilbert helped found the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. He served as its secretary until 1972, and then as its executive director until 1974. Gilbert worked as the landmarks and preservation law chief counsel at the National Trust for Historic Preservation from 1975 to 1984, and as the senior field representative from 1984 to 2010. He received an honorary degree from Brandeis University in 2016.
