General note

Series Note

Correspondence is limited to a few selected exchanges with fellow judges on Calvert Magruder's own and other federal courts. His most extensive and most significant correspondence is that with his former teacher and Law School colleague, Felix Frankfurter who proceeded to the U.S. Supreme Court a year after Magruder's appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals; their correspondence in these files extends from 1928 to the time of Frankfurter's death in 1965. There is also material relating to Magruder's retirement from the Bench and an exchange with President Lowell of Harvard in 1927 concerning the report of the so-called "Lowell Committee" on the Sacco-Vanzetti case.

Correspondence covers the years 1927 to 1965, and it is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. For additional correspondence, see Series VII: ADDENDA.
