General note

Series Note

Correspondence covers years 1924 to 1970, but there are gaps, notably for the 1934 through 1940 period. Correspondents are colleagues at Harvard and at other institutions, students, alumni, law review editors, friends in this country and abroad, publishing houses other than his own publishers, and journalists. Corr. reflects JMM's keen interest in people, in local and world affairs, and in the improvement of his profession, be it teaching, the judiciary or the bar. A large part of the general correspondence concerns summer travel plans of the Maguires, and JMM's travel-related hobbies: fishing and photography. Many carbons are of long, typewritten letters reporting to friends on the Maguires' activities of the year. JMM showed great loyalty to former employees also by keeping in touch for years after they left.

Corr. is arranged chronologically by year, and within each year alphabetically by correspondent. Files include both letters received and carbons of letters sent.
