Morton J. Horwitz papers

Content Description

Assorted material created and assembled by Morton J. Horwitz from approximately 1969 to 2012. The collection includes course material, student work, subject files, personal and professional correspondence, and research and profesional material, including copies of the Harvard Law Review and various textbooks. Course materials include drafts of syllabi and course reading packets, draft exam questions, and student papers. There are also student theses and dissertations, and assorted manuscripts by others. The collection also includes a small amount of art and audio recordings. A significant portion of the collection relates to courses taught by Horwitz including Torts, the Warren Court, American Legal History, and Corporate Law, in addition to other topics.

This collection is minimally arranged and described, and may require review prior to access. Access to these papers is governed by the rules and regulations of the Harvard Law School Library. This collection is open to the public, but is housed off-site at the Harvard Depository and requires 7-10 business-day advance notice for retrieval. A small subset of the collection is closed pending archival processing to prepare it for access. Consult Historical & Special Collections staff for further information.

Biographical / Historical

Morton J. Horwitz received his A.B. from the City College of New York in 1959, his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1962 and 1964), as well as his LL.B. from the Harvard Law School in 1967. Horwitz became an Associate Professor of Law at HLS in 1970 and was appointed the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History in 1981. His first book,

This collection was minimally arranged and described by Harvard Law School Library staff. All of the material was re-boxed due to the condition of the original containers. Some materials were separated and rearranged, but otherwise original order maintained as closely as possible. Select material was re-foldered due to concerns over condition.
