The collection contains approximately 550 letters and postcards from Frank A. Loda to his family in Texarkana, Arkansas. The letters and postcards document Loda’s experiences as an undergraduate student at Harvard University from 1952 to 1956. Also chronicled are Loda's graduate studies at Columbia University in the summer of 1956; and his studies as a medical student at Vanderbilt University from 1956 to 1961, including at the Vanderbilt University Hospital. Also detailed are Loda’s residencies at Tulane University in New Orleans and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in 1962. There is a gap in Loda's correspondence from 1959 to April 1960.

The letters detail Loda’s academic activities, including the quizzes and examinations he took, papers he was working on, his classes, and his medical studies. His participation in extracurricular activities is mentioned including his membership in clubs, going to football and baseball games, attending movies and plays, and visiting with friends. An interested political observer, several of the letters contain Loda’s comments on American politics, including the 1960 presidential election. The collection also includes family materials that chiefly relate to Loda’s parents, Frank A. Loda (1902-1977) and Muriel Kline Loda (1905-2000). Especially prominent are photographs of Loda’s mother and grandmother; and a notebook of poems compiled by Muriel Kline, presumably as a high school student.
