Abstract
Frank Aloysius Loda, Jr., (born 1934), physician and professor, received his AB (1956) from Harvard University and his MD (1960) from Vanderbilt University (four years in medical school and one year as an intern in pediatrics). The collection contains approximately 550 letters and postcards from Loda to his family in Texarkana, Arkansas. The letters and postcards document Loda’s experiences as an undergraduate student at Harvard University from 1952 to 1956, and his post-graduate studies at Columbia and Vanderbilt Universities from 1956 to 1962. The collection also includes family materials chiefly related to Loda’s parents, Frank A. Loda (1902-1977) and Muriel Kline Loda (1905-2000), principally photographs from the 1890s to 1961.

The letters and postcards document Loda’s experiences as an undergraduate student at Harvard University from 1952 to 1956. Also chronicled are Loda's graduate studies at Columbia University in the summer of 1956; and his studies as a medical student at Vanderbilt University from 1956 to 1961, including at the Vanderbilt University Hospital. Also detailed are Loda’s residencies at Tulane University in New Orleans and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in 1962. There is a gap in Loda's correspondence from 1959 to April 1960.
The letters detail Loda’s academic activities, including the quizzes and examinations he took, papers he was working on, his classes, and his medical studies. His participation in extracurricular activities is mentioned including his membership in clubs, going to football and baseball games, attending movies and plays, and visiting with friends. An interested political observer, several of the letters contain Loda’s comments on American politics, including the 1960 presidential election. The collection also includes family materials that chiefly relate to Loda’s parents, Frank A. Loda (1902-1977) and Muriel Kline Loda (1905-2000). Especially prominent are photographs of Loda’s mother and grandmother; and a notebook of poems compiled by Muriel Kline, presumably as a high school student.
Biographical note
Frank Aloysius Loda, Jr., (born 1934), physician and professor, received his AB (1956) from Harvard University and his MD (1960) from Vanderbilt University (four years in medical school and one year as an intern in pediatrics). In December 1961, Loda joined the United States Public Health Service in New Orleans, Louisiana. Beginning July 1, 1962, he worked as a clinical associate at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where his primary interest was viral respiratory disease. After completing his residency requirements, Loda was a research fellow from 1966 to 1967 in the Department of Medicine of the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England. He then returned to the United States and joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, where he specialized in early child care and educational services for young children. From 1971 to 1990, Loda was the chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the University of North Carolina. Loda was the author or co-author of numerous papers dealing with respiratory infections in children, day care for children, infections in day care, and child abuse and neglect and other forms of family violence. In 1964, Loda married Barbara Ann White; they had three children.
