Scope and content

The eleventh volume of College Papers contains original documents from 1824 to 1825, spanning the tenures of president John Thornton Kirkland and treasurer John Davis. Much of the volume consists of general administrative correspondence exchanged between Kirkland and Davis, as well as correspondence between Davis and Steward Stephen Higginson.

Topics of note include an 1824 bill of Elizabeth Johnson for sweeping, cleaning public windows, and scouring student rooms; queries of professors regarding College exercises; efforts to reduce the expenses of the College; a contract regarding the donation of the collection of the Linnean Society to the College; a Gymnasium; Episcopal Church; Edward Everett’s election to Congress and his position on the Harvard faculty; Panorama of Athens; a new building near the Court House; reports of departments; and a letter from the Council Clerk for the Narragansett tribe, with whom missionary Frederick Baylies worked.

Item numbers were assigned by the archivist. An index in chronological order at the back of volume refers to page numbers, not item numbers.
