Scope and content

The tenth volume of College Papers contains original documents dating from 1821 to 1824, spanning the tenures of president John Thornton Kirkland and treasurer John Davis. Much of the volume consists of general administrative correspondence exchanged between Kirkland and Davis, as well as correspondence between Davis and Steward Stephen Higginson. It also contains a printed document from 1831, during the tenure of president Josiah Quincy.

Topics of note include the Committee of the Corporation on the state of the College; memorial to Congress from Harvard and other universities on the duties on books imported from abroad, including letter from Thomas Jefferson to Kirkland; the 1823 student disorder, with letters from John Quincy Adams pleading the case of his son, John Adams; the proposal of a West Boston Bridge turnpike to Watertown; the expiration of grants to the College from the General Court; construction of a building for the exhibition of the Panorama of Athens; Asa Messer’s experiments in hydraulics; and regulations, circulation figures, and a new arrangement of the Library.
