Overview

Students who had withdrawn from the College prior to completing their coursework could be nominated by their classmates to receive degrees. Consists primarily of petitions to the President and Fellows of Harvard College requesting the granting of bachelor degrees out of course. The petitions illustrate the loyalty and long-standing friendships among Harvard College classmates.

Consists primarily of petitions to the President and Fellows of Harvard College requesting the granting of bachelor degrees out of course. The records include testimony of alumni regarding the academic and moral character of degree candidates, the reasons for their withdrawal from the College, an account of candidates' achievements and experiences since leaving the College, and indicate whether or not the petition was granted. The petitions illustrate the loyalty and long-standing friendships among Harvard College classmates. Materials consist of handwritten and typewritten correspondence, petitions, students records, and letters of endorsement.

Historical note

Students who had withdrawn from the College prior to completing their coursework could be nominated by their classmates to receive degrees. Petitions were circulated and submitted on behalf of withdrawn students by their classmates. Many were circulated in advance of a class anniversary.
