Historical note
On September 6, 1943, Harvard University presented British Prime Minister Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his resolve in turning back “the tide of tyranny in freedom’s darkest hour.” After receiving his degree, Churchill addressed a national radio audience from Sanders Theatre promoting Anglo-American unity and postwar cooperation to safeguard future world security. Later, Churchill attended a luncheon at the Fogg Museum and appeared on the steps of Memorial Church, greeting a crowd of 10,000 people including cadets, military officers, students and faculty, staff members, and alumni.
