The collection includes black-and-white portrait photographs of Harvard University students, mostly from the Class of 1964, documenting notable achievements and involvement in various student organizations, including the Harvard Glee Club, Phillips Brooks House, Harvard Yacht Club, WHRB-FM, The Crimson, and Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra. Taken by News Office staff and student photographers in the early 1960s, the photographs were intended for release to the students' hometown newspapers. Also included are some photographs of faculty and staff from 1956 and 1960, including Harvard Medical School Professor of Surgery Francis D. Moore and Professor of Psychiatry Harry C. Solomon, and Harvard Law School Professor Louis Loss. Three negatives of astronomer and physicist Walter S. McAfee taken in 1957 are also found in the collection. Contact prints (box 1) for most negatives (box 2) are available for reference use in the Harvard University Archives reading room.
Historical note
The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. During the early 1970s, the News Office was placed administratively under the Office of the Vice President for Government, Community, and Public Affairs. In 1994-1995, the name of the office was changed to Harvard University Office of News and Public Affairs and later was renamed Public Affairs and Communications.
