David Sandler Berkowitz (1913-1983) received his Harvard A.B. in 1938, and his Ph.D. in 1946. While a graduate student, he was a section leader for Roger Merriman's History 1 course. These student and teaching notes document the curricular activities of a student, including both his own studies and his student teaching as section leader. Berkowitz's detailed notes for discussions and examinations document well the workings of the popular survey course, History 1, as do departmental instructions regarding grading and other organizational issues. The papers consist primarily of Berkowitz's lecture and reading notes for courses taken as an undergraduate and graduate student and his teaching notes and other preparatory and administrative material for his work as section leader for History 1.

Biographical Note

David Sandler Berkowitz (1913-1983) received his Harvard A.B. in 1938, and his Ph.D. in 1946. While a graduate student, he was a section leader for Roger Merriman's History 1 course. Berkowitz also worked as a tutor for the Board of Supervisors (later called the Bureau of Study Counsel) and served as a consultant to the War Services Information Bureau at Harvard during World War II.

Separated Materials

Some correspondence relating to Berkowitz's work with the War Services Information Bureau had been among the Berkowitz accessions. Harvard University Archives staff determined that this was in fact part of the official records of the Bureau, also housed at the Harvard University Archives, in call number: UAV 875.9
