History of the Harvard Chapter of the American Veterans Committee

The American Veterans Committee was founded in 1944 as a veterans organization that supported a range of liberal causes. Targeted in anti-communist campaigns during the late 1940s, the Committee lost significant membership, but continued through 2007, when the last two chapters closed.

Originally part of the American Veterans Committee Cambridge Chapter, the Harvard Chapter of the American Veterans Committee was established in 1946. Open to all veterans associated with the University, it had 830 undergraduate members at its peak. The chapter ran seminars for veterans and organized social events. In 1950, it campaigned heavily against the University's decision to cut all subsidized housing for married students.

Processing Information

The Records of the Harvard Chapter of the American Veterans Committee were first classified and described in the Harvard University Archives shelflist prior to 1980. In March 2008, Juliana Kuipers re-processed the material. Re-processing involved reorganizing the collection, housing materials in the appropriate containers, establishing a series hierarchy, and creating this inventory. All call numbers were simplified.
