Joseph Clark Grew (1880-1965) graduated from Harvard in 1902, then worked as an officer with the United States Foreign Service from 1904 to 1945; he held multiple positions within the United States federal government, including acting Secretary of State for five months in 1945. Collection consists of a photograph album (1899-1902) assembled by Joseph Clark Grew, member of the Harvard College Class of 1902, and an autographed copy of Grew’s 1944 book, Ten Years in Japan: A Contemporary Record Drawn from the Diaries and Private and Official Papers of Joseph C. Grew.

Biographical Note
Joseph Clark Grew (1880-1965), diplomat and Foreign Service officer, was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 27, 1880, to Edward Sturgis Grew and Annie Crawford Clark Grew. He earned his Harvard AB in 1902, and married Alice de Vermandais Perry in 1905; the couple had four children. Wilson worked as an officer with the United States Foreign Service from 1904 to 1945, serving as president of the United States Foreign Service Association from 1944 to 1945. Grew held multiple positions within the United States federal government, serving as minister and ambassador to various foreign nations (including Japan, from 1932 to 1942), Special Assistant to the Secretary of State, Under Secretary of State, and acting Secretary of State for five months in 1945. He served as president of the Harvard Alumni Association from 1942 to 1943 and on the Board of Overseers of Harvard, beginning in 1943. Grew died in 1965.
