Scope of the Harvard University Series

It includes speeches and outlines of speeches which Ylvisaker gave while dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education for orientations, commencements, and other public events; it contains letters confirming his appointment as dean, congratulatory notes from colleagues and friends, correspondence from alumni, students, and staff, and newspaper clippings, memos, and documents surrounding his resignation. The personnel file is the only file that pre-dates his Deanship; it includes appointments to minor positions at Harvard, a few syllabi, grade sheets, and information concerning the fellowship he received as a student.

Biographical Note relating to the Harvard University Series

PNY's began his association with Harvard as a student in the late 1940's. In September of 1972, PNY became dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During this time, and after he resigned as dean, he served as the Charles William Eliot professor of education. He encouraged the school to explore broad education theory, philosophy, and child development. He was successful at committing the Graduate School of Education to a public service mission. He also worked to raise the ratio of women and minorities at the school. At other points in his career, PNY served in other positions within the University system.
