Harvard University Archives Photograph Collection: Portraits

Photographs of individuals associated with Harvard University: faculty, students, administrators, staff, honorees, and habitués of Harvard Square. For those whose lives pre-date the era of photography, the contents of the folders are often photographic reproductions of other image types, such as etchings, paintings, or drawings. In a few cases, the images themselves may be original etchings or sketches.

Researchers should consider that the identities of individuals in this file to be potentially unreliable, and should seek additional confirmation that the person depicted is correctly identified.

Processing Information

Staff in the Harvard University Archives, and their predecessors, staff in the Harvard College Library, compiled this collection from a variety of sources. The photographs described here came from collections of personal papers, student photograph albums, and some university records. Photographs of individuals were gathered under the individual's name. The groups of photographs were then housed in alphabetical order.

Notes on the List of Portraits

For most individuals, the date of their earliest Harvard degree is noted. This information is useful in differentiating between individuals with identical names. There has been no attempt to include in this list comprehensive biographical information, although in some cases additional information has been included in this list.
