Biographical / Historical

In 1738, Harvard purchased a farm of approximately 160 acres in Waltham, Massachusetts, from Anthony Caverly with proceeds from the sale of the Rowley lands bequeathed to the College by Ezekiel Rogers. The farm was often referred to as Rogers Farm, in honor of the source of the purchasing funds, and it was leased to generate income. Although some tenants paid their rent in "lawful silver money," others paid with beef, pork, Indian corn, cider, butter, cheese, potatoes, rye, oats, barley, melons, squashes, flax, and hay. Several Harvard employees were among the tenants, including Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy Samuel Williams and College Steward Caleb Gannett. The farm was sold in 1835 for $5,000, which became the Ezekiel Rogers Fund.
