Extent

82 cubic feet (244 document boxes, 11 volumes)

Arrangement

These records are arranged into eight 3-year chronological groups. The folder numbers re-start at "1" in each group, therefore folder number alone is not a unique identifier. Use the series date range and the box number to uniquely identify a folder.

Vistors to the Harvard University Archives should request to see the entire box in which a folder is located.

Minor Interfiling

Less than a dozen documents formerly grouped with other records of the Lowell administration and collectively referred to as "Additional papers" or "Supplemental material" were interfiled in the correspondence in March 2007. Notes indicating these insertions were added to the index and the folder list.

About the Online Index

This index was compiled with minor changes from the nine-part index prepared by the Office of the President.  Changes made were to add new terms for obsolete words or obsolete place names.  In a few cases, terms for ethnic groups that may be considered offensive were replaced with newer terms and the obsolete terms were removed.  All changes to the indexes are in square brackets.  University Archives staff have noted some circular references, but have not attempted to find all such references or correct them.  Similarly, Archives staff have noted cases of inverted or alternate terms (for example: Arnold Arboretum and Arboretum, Arnold; Astronomy and Astronomy Department) in use for the same entity, but have not attempted to rectify every split reference.  Users should be aware of the inconsistencies and look under all forms of the name.  There are no entries beginning with the letter X.

These were transcribed by Juliana Kuipers and encoded by Kate Bowers, in 2003.
