Scope and content
The ninth volume of College Papers contains original documents dating from 1819 to 1821, spanning the tenures of president John Thornton Kirkland and treasurer John Davis, as well as correspondence between Davis and Steward Stephen Higginson. Much of the volume consists of general administrative correspondence exchanged between Kirkland and Davis. It also contains an early 20th century typewritten document.
Topics of note include a Report of the Midwifery Department of the Harvard Medical School by Walter Channing; the report of the Committee appointed to consider the general state of the College; heating the College and sweeping chimneys; Panorama of Athens; commons and master of the kitchen Whiting Cooley; Daniel Webster and the Committee to inquire into the constitutional rights of the College; and memorials and letters from William Croswell regarding his work on a library catalogue.
Item numbers were assigned by the archivist. An index in chronological order at the back of volume refers to page numbers, not item numbers.
