Harvard College Papers, 1st series, Volume 7, 1811-1815, 1819 Digital

Scope and content

The seventh volume of the College Papers contains original documents dating from 1811 to 1815, spanning the tenures of president John Thornton Kirkland and treasurer John Davis. Much of the volume consists of general administrative correspondence exchanged between Kirkland and Davis. It also contains one document from 1819.

Topics of note include changes to the constituency of the Board of Overseers; missionary work of Frederick Baylies to the Native Americans of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts; missionary work of Phineas Fish at Mashpee (or Marshpee), Massachusetts; work on Benjamin Waterhouse’s house; Waterhouse and the cabinet of minerals; the chapel in University Hall, the new University Church, and the First Parish in Cambridge; inauguration of Edward Everett as Greek Professor; purchases of books and instruments; anatomical preparations in wax; and the creation of fund for the relief of widows and families of College officers.
