Scope and content

The fifth volume of College Papers contains original documents dating from 1805 to 1809, spanning the tenures of president Samuel Webber and treasurers Ebenezer Storer and Jonathan Jackson.

Topics of note include the completion of Stoughton Hall; professorships; Benjamin Waterhouse's courses in Natural History and the mineralogical cabinet; student disorders at Harvard and Princeton; the death and estate of Ebenezer Storer; Boylston Medical prizes and design of the prize medal; Waterhouse's purchase of his house; the appointment of John Quincy Adams to the Boylston chair; agreement of the tutors to comply with by-laws of the Corporation in 1808; the Cambridge and Concord Turnpike; student discipline; and travels of William Dandridge Peck in Europe.

Item numbers were assigned by William Garrott Brown during the creation of his calendar. Item level descriptions and biographical source information within quotation marks were taken directly from the calendar. There is no Item 177; the number was never assigned. An index in chronological order at the back of volume refers to page numbers, not item numbers.
