Scope and content

The third volume of the College Papers contains original documents dating from 1785 to 1796, spanning the tenures of president Joseph Willard and treasurer Ebenezer Storer. The series chiefly consists of incoming correspondence for Storer.

Topics of note include the missionary work of Gideon Hawley to the Native Americans at Mashpee (or Marshpee), Massachusetts, with occasional references to the affairs of the Mashpee Indians and studies of his son, James Hawley (Harvard College Class of 1792); College finances and efforts to collect on bonds; the missionary work of John Sergeant, Jr. to the Native Americans at Stockbridge, Massachusetts; the missionary work of Samuel Kirkland to the Native Americans at Oneida, New York, as well as references to the undergraduate experience of his son, John Thornton Kirkland; Boyle's legacy and the New England Company; requests to the General Court for aid; retirement of Professor Samuel Williams; donations; College rents; West Boston Bridge; and the College sloop Cyrus.

Item level descriptions and biographical source information within quotation marks were taken directly from the calendar. An index in chronological order at the back of volume refers to page numbers, not item numbers.
