Financial and student records, 1773-1800

Scope and Contents

This series contains records from Shapleigh's time as a Harvard student and employee, including his 1785 Admittatur to the College, quarter bills from 1785 through 1799, Buttery bills from 1786 to 1796, and several bonds required by the Harvard Corporation to ensure payment of his College expenses. Although he graduated with the class of 1789, Shapleigh continued as a Harvard student through 1792, when he received an A.M. He continued to receive quarter bills and Buttery bills after the completion of his studies because he became a Harvard employee and thus incurred routine charges, primarily for food and drink. This series also includes extensive records of Shapleigh's personal expenses over the course of almost fifteen years; these records are described in greater detail in the scope and content note below for Subseries A. In addition, this series contains records related to Shapleigh's settlement of financial matters with his legal guardian, Samuel Leighton; financial statements; a bill to the town of Cambridge for keeping school in 1789; and memoranda on various topics.
