Biographical / Historical

John Barnard (1681-1770), a Marblehead, Mass. minister, graduated from Harvard in 1700, and received an AM in 1703. After preaching sermons around New England and in London, Barnard was ordained as the minister of Marblehead in 1716 and served until his death on January 24, 1770. Barnard regularly preached sermons in Boston and delivered the second Dudleian lecture at Harvard. He was an active supporter of Harvard and donated books to the College after the fire of 1764. Barnard bequeathed £200 to Harvard in his will. He married Anna Woodbury in 1718 and adopted Anna’s grand-nephew John Barnard Swett (Harvard AB 1771).
