Scope and Contents

The College Letters document the governance of Harvard University under Cornelius Felton's administration. These letters address votes taken by the Corporation, the Board of Overseers, and the faculty. The letters note committee activities, cite committee reports, and mention faculty appointments. Many of the letters refer to student misbehavior and infractions. In addition, some of the letters also mention military drill instruction for undergraduate students, which anticipated service in the Union Army during the Civil War.

The letters in this volume are handwritten but not in Felton's hand. The volume is paginated. It does not contain an index.

Letters from March 1, 1862 to November 27, 1862 are signed by Andrew Preston Peabody,Acting President of the University on the death of Felton.
