Biographical Materials, 1861, 1872-1935 and undated

Scope and Content

This series includes materials that illuminate the early academic career, business, and personal activities of David Gordon Lyon.

Of particular interest are Lyon's diaries that span a period of sixty years (1870-1934). They include daily descriptions of his activities, recount his trips abroad, enumerate his interactions with family, friends, and members of the academic community, and describe his undertakings at Harvard College. Moreover, they provide a glimpse into Lyon's personal relationship with his wives, Tosca and Mabel, and his son, David Jr.

This series contains letters, postcards, notebooks, ledger books, diaries, contracts, bills of sale, inventories, invitations, and photographs.

Processing Information

The biographical material in this series was gathered together and arranged alphabetically by subject, topic, or genre by the archivist. Ephemera found in Lyon's diaries was dated by the archivist when necessary to indicate its original location within the diary and relocated to file folders which immediately follow the corresponding diary. Diary ephemera folders include notes, letters, news clippings, invitation cards, tickets, postcards, poetry, notices, and programs. Photographs were removed from the diaries and placed in the family and friends photograph folder. Bundled student exercise papers from Howard College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary were unfolded and placed in file folders.
