Journal from [February] 2 to May 1, [1889] / S. I. Bailey Digital

Scope and Contents

Bailey's journal begins on February 2, 1889 and ends on April 30, 1889. The beginning of the journal records Bailey's departure from San Francisco with his wife and son, left San Francisco for his first trip to Peru to assess the viability of establishing an observatory in the southern hemisphere. Bailey's impressions of his sea and overland travels, including accounts of his experiences at various ports along the coast of Mexico, Guatemala, and Panama are noted. This journal also describes Bailey's exploratory trips to the mountain areas near the villages of Chosica, Chicla, and Matucana, traveling on foot or on mule back, in search of a good observation site. The journal ends with the establishment of Mount Harvard near the town of Chosica in April, 1889.
