Biographical / Historical

The Center for Effective Philanthropy (1980-1998) was a Massachusetts trust dedicated to conducting research and educational programs in the field of philanthropy and to providing direct assistance to donor organizations in enhancing their philanthropic programs. Papers ranging from the period 1979-1988 were given to Gutman Special Collections by Martin S. Klein, Secretary-Treasurer of CEP, 1982-1998, in February 2003. Prominent members and Harvard-associated members of CEP included Marty Klein, Harold (Doc) Howe II, Merrimon Cuninggim and F. Champion (Champ) Ward.

Arrangement

Although the Center for Effective Philanthropy Papers were accessioned at 5 linear feet, the collection was reduced to 3 linear feet in processing. The reduction occurred through the removal of bulky metal hanging files, and discards of items such as multiple copies of reports or letters, published non-unique foundation brochures, as well as of numerous routine bank statements, checks, checkbooks, and invoices. File labels were generally retained except in cases of redundancy when some files were incorporated. The collection is arranged in two series: Series I. Correspondence and Foundations, and Series II. CEP Files – A-Z. The only items out of the date span are 1993 bank statements which may be determined to be discarded. The fact that papers from 1993 appeared in the donation, suggests there may be more papers to be acquired.
