Scope and Contents

Contains daily charges for sale and shipment, cleaning, and repair of timepieces and other articles by William Bond & Son, from 1852 to 1857. Also includes records of business and administrative activities, such as imports of parts and instruments, purchase of insurance and an iron safe, rent payment, participation of Richard F. Bond in the United States Coast Survey, and expenses related to temporary relocation while the firm renovated a new storefront on Congress Street in the spring of 1852. There are also a list of names to whom William Bond & Son sent circulars and cards; entries on activities related to the exhibition of the Spring Governor No. 1 at the London Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851; and employment records, such as the hiring of Cecilia Ann Wood as bookkeeper in November 1856. Accounts include the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Survey, the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission, the Boston and Providence Railroad, and the Harvard College Observatory. The end of the volume contains data and notes on "magnetic declinations at Cambridge and in its vicinity" apparently recorded in part at Harvard College Observatory from 1700 to 1873; a list of chronometers for sale and on loan in 1852; addresses of customers and colleagues; and a news clipping regarding the U.S. expedition to the Colorado River, for which William Bond & Son supplied chronometers.
