Scope and Contents

Contains daily charges for sale and shipment, cleaning, and repair of timepieces and other instruments by William Bond & Son, and records of business and administrative activities, such as hiring and firing employees, contracting for security guards, and printing stationery. An entry from August 16, 1849, records the return of Richard F. Bond from Liverpool with the first chronometers that would be used in the United States Coast Survey. An entry dated January 7, 1851, includes details of the items William Bond & Son intended to display at the London Crystal Palace Exhibition: an electric clock and spring governor, and Galvanic battery; an April 5 entry notes the instruments Richard F. Bond, as an agent for the U.S. Coast Survey, and George P. Bond carried with them when they sailed to England via Halifax, Nova Scotia. Accounts include clock makers Thomas Adams and Thomas Hutton of London, from whom William Bond & Son also acquired timepieces and instruments, the United States Navy, the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission, and Liberian President Joseph J. Roberts (1809-1876). Also contains some personal accounts of Joseph C. Bond, notes on land deeds, and an entry in January 1852 recording the lease of a store for William Bond & Son on No. 3 Congress Street in Boston.
