Scope and Contents
Leather diary kept by J. Morton Clinch in 1855-1856 detailing the weather, political and social news, his personal activities and those of his family and neighbors, and his professional work. Entries also record election results, neighbors' births and deaths, church services, attendance to the theater, and events like a lecture by freed slave Anthony Burns (1834-1862) on May 26, 1855, and the funeral of politician Abbott Lawrence (1792-1855) on August 22, 1855. Also includes some illustrations and notes related to treating textiles, and lists of travel costs in 1863 at the end of the volume.
