Contains a letterbook and loose letters with correspondence from Lawrence and his company representatives to a variety of recipients, dating 1847 July to 1855 February. Letters continue through 1865 March, sinced as A. and A. Lawrence Co., James Lawrence, or William Dwight (treasurer). The topics of the letters include education, industrial development, Central America, politics, diplomacy, the American Colonization Society, the cotton market, railroad investment, war with Mexico, and more.

Biographical / Historical

Lawrence, a merchant, textile manufacturer, railroad promoter, Massachusetts congressman, and diplomat, was the U.S. minister to England (1849-1852).
