10.4 linear feet (9 boxes)This collection includes subject and research files related to Martin Camacho's positions as a labor officer and Chief of the Labor Division (1941-1951) in the Kanto Civil Affairs Region during the Allied occupation of Japan. Also includes files created as a result of research and writing for his PhD dissertation "Administration of SCAP labor policy in occupied Japan" (Harvard University, 1954).
The bulk of the collection dates to 1945-1951. Most records concern Japan, the Japanese people, and labor policy under the Supreme Commander for Allied Powers in occupied Japan.
Collection materials include but are not limited to correspondence, memorandums, reports, clippings, photographs, commendations, recommendations, manuals, legislation, research notes and drafts, contracts, bulletins, printed materials, charts, and gazettes.
Biographical / Historical
Martin Thomas Camacho (1913-1973, Harvard M.A. 1948, Harvard PhD 1954) was born in Portugal and immigrated to the United States in 1916. He received his L.L.B. from Suffolk University School of Law in 1937 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1937. He served in World War II from 1942-1946, and under the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) within the Labor Division in the Kanto Civil Affairs Region (KCAR) from 1941-1951.
