Includes costume designs for motion pictures Casanova (1927), Sheherazade (1928), Des Weisse teufel (1929), Stjenka Razin (1936), and Amore imperiale (1941) filmed in Germany and Italy by Aleksandr Volkov (Alexandre Volkoff); Le lion de Mogols (1924) filmed in France by Jean Epstein, Michel Strogoff filmed in France by Jacques de Baroncelli; Paura d'amare (1942) filmed in Italy by Gaetano Amata; De Mayerling a Sarajevo (1940) filmed in USA by Max Ophuls; and Le Prince Charmant (1924) filmed in France by Victor Tourjansky. Aslo includes designs for opera Tsar Saltan, ballet Princesse Cygne, and drama Saint Joan.

Collection also includes notes (photocopies) from Boris Bilinsky's grandson, René Clémenti-Bilinsky who identified many misidentified designs.

Biographical / Historical

Boris Konstantinovich Bilinsky (1900-1948) was a Russian-born designer. He left Russia in 1920, and moved to Berlin where he worked with prominent Russian emigre movie directors and theater companies. In the 1930s he moved to Italy where he continued to work as a theater and cinema designer and graphic artist.
